Beginners’ Irish – Level 2 (Irish for Improvers)

Tutor: Dr Ian Malcolm BA PhD
Time: 19:00 – 21:00
Duration: 10 weeks
Dates: 15 Apr 2021
Code: LNG226

This lively course is aimed at those who already have a ‘cúpla focal’ but would like to improve their grasp of an Ghaeilge. It’s perfect for those who have done the Beginners’ Irish Lifelong Learning course, as well as ‘rusty returners’ who would like to get back into the language and bring that old ‘school Irish’ to life.
The emphasis is on Ulster Irish, but the tutor, Dr Ian Malcolm, ensures that learners are well aware of alternative forms they may encounter from the other major dialects. The course will provide a strong foundation in spoken Irish but care is taken to enable students to achieve a solid understanding of essential grammar points.
There might even be a song or two along the way!

A Brief History of the Irish Language

Tutor: Dr Ian Malcolm BA PhD

Irish has rarely been out of the headlines of late, and in this course the tutor, Dr Ian Malcolm, will dispel many of the myths about a language regarded by experts as Europe’s oldest vernacular tongue and drill down to reveal a rich heritage that includes our placenames and surnames.
The course explores its Indo-European roots and relationship to other languages: Latin and Norse both had a role in shaping the vocabulary. The politics of language will also be discussed, with emphasis on cutting through the arguments to provide an honest picture of Irish in the 21st century.
A strand on our musical tradition will explain how a good tune can be used to support any cause, with examples showing that many ‘party songs’ actually share the same origins. The tunes stay the same – it’s only the words that change!

This course will be available again in September 2021
